The Hon. Sir Roger Douglas, after an eighteen-year retirement from Parliament, has now returned to the back-benches as an MP for the ACT Party. Sir Roger Douglas previously served as a Minister in several Labour Governments, and served 21 years as a Member of Parliament representing the various Manukau electorates.
After leaving Parliament, Sir Roger founded the Association of Consumers and Taxpayers, which was turned into ACT New Zealand. Sir Roger Douglas is currently serving his eighth term as an MP. The 2008 election represents the first time Sir Roger has been elected as an ACT MP.
The Hon. Sir Roger Douglas is ranked at number three on the ACT Party list and serves as a list MP under New Zealand’s MMP system.
At 72 years of age the Hon. Sir Roger Douglas is one of the most senior and experienced members of Parliament. Returning to the ranks of the back-benches, he continues with the outspoken style that gained him the title of New Zealand’s most radical Finance Minister ever. As a non-minister Sir Roger continues to deliver his hard-hitting criticism of the economic and social impacts bought about by such factors as high taxes and Government waste, outlining his own brand of State Welfare reform that he believes would address our current social and economic injustices.
